For three months, a small, abandoned dog found refuge beneath a display screen at a fast-food drive-thru in Los Angeles County. Despite numerous attempts to capture him, the dog remained elusive until rescuers from Logan’s Legacy 29, led by Suzette Hall, managed to intervene.
Last month, a concerned customer noticed the scruffy dog sleeping under the drive-thru menu and immediately contacted Logan’s Legacy 29 for help. When Hall and her team arrived, they found the dog had made several spots around the restaurant his home, including under the sign and near his favorite bush and palm tree.
The security guard informed the team that the dog had been living near the restaurant for months, navigating the dangers of busy streets and relying on occasional feedings from staff.
Hall’s team set up traps with enticing treats in hopes of capturing him, but the busy environment made the task challenging. The dog avoided the traps and continued to move between his favorite spots, evading rescue efforts.
After a difficult day of trying to catch him, Hall and her team decided to return early the next morning. Two volunteers, Yamileth and Karla, managed to catch the dog by quietly using a blanket as a net while he was sleeping.
The dog, who was later named Coconut, was taken to Camino Pet Hospital for a thorough medical check-up and grooming. After receiving a clean bill of health and a much-needed haircut, Coconut was able to rest comfortably in a real bed for the first time in months.
Now, just over a week since his rescue, Coconut is thriving in his foster home and looking for a permanent family. His recent visit to the beach revealed his joy and appreciation for his new life. According to Hall, “He loved the smell and watching the water,” and his happy demeanor reflected his newfound happiness and sense of security.
