Josephine, affectionately known as “Pheenie,” was abandoned after her owner was deported. She took refuge behind a shipping container in a junkyard, where she found minimal shelter from the harsh elements. For nine long years, Pheenie survived on scraps and leftovers that kind-hearted locals provided, but the toll of neglect eventually became too great.
By the time Pheenie was an elderly dog, her health had significantly deteriorated. She had been hit by a truck, resulting in the loss of her right eye, and was suffering from a spinal cord infection, severe dental issues, a urinary tract infection, and multiple painful breast tumors.
This poignant story follows the efforts of Hope For Paws volunteers as they work to rescue Pheenie from her harsh existence. Despite the challenges of her condition, Pheenie sensed that help had finally arrived. Her relief was palpable as she greeted her rescuers with a mixture of gratitude and resignation.
Pheenie was placed in a permanent foster program to address her extensive medical needs. For five precious months, she lived a life of comfort and care on her foster home’s spacious farm. Though her earlier years were marked by hardship and isolation, her final months were filled with love and tenderness. Pheenie’s story is a testament to the difference compassion can make.
